Thomas was the son of Marshall and Hanah Wantland Galloway and the husband of Susannah Dishman Galloway. Some sources state that Thomas was born in Botetourt Co., VA. Thomas' father, Marshall Galloway, served in the Virginia Militia during the American Revolution and lived his later years in Sullivan Co., TN. Thomas reportedly fought under Gen. Andrew Jackson at the battle of New Orleans in the War of 1812. He was assigned to General Gabriel Slaughter's Regiment in the 15th Kentucky Militia and served in Captain Evans company as a Sergeant. After the war he was granted bounty land in Kentucky (Thomas made application for bounty land for his services in the War of 1812 and received 80 acres - Warrant #9861 issued on 15 July 1851). Thomas and Susannah's children were Marshall L., James M., Margarette (mrd J.B. Tarrants), Jerimiah M., Thomas Nelson, Susan (fag 30001141; mrd F.M. Downey), Fleming M., Wm L., Abraham M., John A., Harden T., Matilda and Jefferson D. Galloway (fag 60511602).
