After graduation he remained in New York for two years; part of the time as a reporter in central New York and part of the time in law practice. He came to Omaha in 1857 and opened a law office; combining it with an insurance and real estate agency. In 1860 he was elected to the Republican Convention in Chicago, he was appointed Marshall of the Nebraska territory 1860-61. In 1871 he was elected to the U.S. Senate and served until 1877. He was one of the chief owners of the "Omaha Republican" newspaper.
