Born Delmenhorst, Germany, son of Henry and Henrietta Meyer Onken. Married Fanny Burnham on November 3, 1880 in Morgan County, IL. Fanny was dau Dr. John Kirby Burnham.
John Onken and bro Gustav, owned and operated a store in Chapin "John D. Onken & Brother". John's son, Harry became a partner in 1915.
They also has a store in Arenzville called "Onken Brothers and Meyer" opened in 1896. They opened another store called "Onken, Meyer, and Cratz" in 1906.
John Onken was the first president of Chapin Bank 1892-1943. He was succeeded by his son, Harry.
