Virgil was a veteran of World War II. He survived the bombing at Pearl Harbor, then continued on to fight in the South Pacific.
After his time in the military, he settled in Louisville, where he met his wife, Helen Standifer. Virgil and Helen had one daughter, Connie, and a small home that they made together for over 35 years.
Virgil survived the death of his wife in 1998 and of his daughter in 2002.
"Virgil was well known for both his generosity of spirit and his hard-working nature. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends."
His funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Arch L. Heady & Son-Dixie Hwy., with burial in Louisville Memorial Gardens-West. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday. The family has requested memorials be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Connie D. Wheeler.
