Laird Phillip Cogley, 92 years of age, passed away peacefully at home on Friday May 23, 2014. Born on January 28, 1922 in Echo, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Earl Henry and Minnie Florence (Farster) Cogley.
A proud member of "The Greatest Generation" and following graduation from Dayton, Pennsylvania High School in 1940, Laird began his employment career in helping thousands of others build the Ravenna Army Amunition Plant.
In November 1942 Laird "Answered The Call" by serving his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Laird was most proud of his military service by helping to keep the B-24 and B-29's Bombers safe and flying. Lairds military stations varied in: New Mexico, Washington, Virginia, Illinois, Utah and Gotham Air Field Savannah, Georgia. Laird last duty station as World War II ended was Nichols Field, Philippine, Islands, and then discharged in February 1946.
Laird was a longtime member of American Legion Post No. 674 in Windham. Prior to Lairds military commitment he married Dorothy LaWave Schrecengost, the love of his life. They remained profoundly committed and inseparable until her death on June 5, 2013. Laird and "LaWave" are survived by their four children who will miss and forever cherish the fond memories. Larry (Cheryl) Cogley of Akron, Ohio, Nancy Beckner of Windham, Tom Cogley of Bonita Springs, Florida and Connie (Jim Craven) Barstow of Garrettsville. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Kerry (Eddie Layton) Poling, Lee (Susan) Beckner, Sean (Renee Doering) Beckner, Molly (Matt) Weems and Lacey Barstow, great-grandchildren, Corey Moore, Megan Palmer, Jacob Beckner, Ellie Beckner, Hannah Weems, Angelina Weems, Emma and Myra Beckner, Lillianna Weems and one great-great-grandchild, Roman Hury. Three brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
He was a member of The United Church of Christ Congregational in Windham where life's true values of caring and sharing proliferated. Laird continuously served in the church men's groups, building committees, construction and renovation activities, always finding time to help those in need, while serving his Lord. A man of many talents, capabilities and passion, Laird was a creator, house builder, home remodeler, plumber, carpenter, electrician, mechanic, hunter, fisherman and Lairds mechanical abilities and talents were evident with the ground-up building of his ultimate "Pride and Joy" a near replica of his first car, a 1930 Model A Deluxe Ford. Laird was a friend to all. His ability to extend his hand in friendship resulted in lifelong friends. As a father, his children were most fortunate. There was never a more selfless individual. Always thinking and doing for others. Always putting others needs ahead of his own. Generous to a fault, loyal, kind to all, a most trusted individual. No calling hours.
Laird will be laid to rest next to his beloved LaWave at a graveside funeral service at Windham Township Cemetery on Wednesday May 28, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Chad Delaney officiating. Burial with full military honors will be provided by U.S. Army Honor Guard Team, assisted by members of Windham American Legion Post No. 674 and Mantua American Legion Post No. 193.
