Willis Harris Butler was born near Munfordville, Hart County, Kentucky; he was the eldest son of George Walton Butler and Annie Eliza Clopton Butler. Unlike many of the folks in Kentucky, Willis was known by his first name. The names of his five siblings are: Lena Olin Butler Frye; Minnie Walton Butler Wilkerson; Virgil Edward Butler; Annie Seamon Butler Hodges; and George Nichols "Nick" Butler.
He married Clara Bird Jaggers in January 1910. They had two children, Gladys Hartswell Butler, October 1910 and Herbert Elisha Butler, January 1917. As a young man, Willis was a farm laborer and smart-aleck, working on a bad reputation, but after he married he became a salesman and for most of his business career he worked for the Prudential Insurance Company and the Jewel-T Company.
He moved his family to Canton, Ohio in the mid 1920s to further his career and because of that moved to Canton, Ohio I am here to tell this story about my great-grandfather, "Pop." I remember when I was about 4 years old, Pop was visiting Ohio when he walked into the room with a glass of Alka-Seltzer. The water was fizzy in the glass, so I asked Pop if I could have a drink. He let me take a sip of the water and that's when I discovered I didn't like the taste of, Alka-Seltzer. Pop lived for a year after that, but I never did asked him for another drink of, Alka-Seltzer.
