Vermont Governor. In 1775 his family moved to Shaftsbury, where he became a farmer and kept an inn. He also joined the Green Mountain Boys, attaining the rank of Captain and commanding two companies in the Battle of Bennington. He was Bennington County Sheriff from 1781 to 1787, playing a key role in preventing the organizers of Shays' Rebellion from making Vermont their base of operations. Galusha served as a member of the state Council of Censors in 1792, and on the Governor's Council from from 1793 to 1798 and 1801 to 1805. From 1795 to 1797 and 1800 to 1806 he was Judge of the Bennington County Court. He was a Judge of the state Supreme Court from 1807 to 1808, and one of Vermont's presidential electors in 1808. In 1809 he was elected Governor as a Democratic-Republican, serving until 1813, when he was succeeded by Martin Chittenden, the brother of Galusha's first wife Mary. In 1814 he was President of the state constitutional convention, and in 1815 Galusha returned to the governorship, serving until 1820. He was a presidential elector again in 1820, President of Vermont's 1822 constitutional convention, and a presidential elector for the final time in 1824. (bio by: Bill McKern)
