British officer in the French & Indian War

Born into a military family, Munro joined the 35th Regiment of Foot. He rose up through the ranks, eventually being promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1750. Six years later, Munro and the 35th Regiment were sent to North America to fight against the French in the French and Indian War. The 35th Regiment was sent to Fort William Henry on the southern tip of Lake George in the wilderness of upstate New York. The following year, a French force, led by General Marquis de Montcalm, marched south and attacked the fort putting it under siege on August 3, 1757. As the French cannons pounded the fort and with no expectations of re-enforcements, Munro was forced to surrender Fort William Henry on August 9. Considering the hopelessness of the situation and with many women and children in the fort, it was Munro's only option. Montcalm allowed the British soldiers and civilians to leave the fort and return to Albany. The next day, the column of British were attacked by Indians, allied with the French, causing a number of deaths, however, Munro was not present during this attack. Munro returned to Albany where he angrily denounced his commander General Daniel Webb for not sending assistance when he needed it. Three months after the surrender of Fort William Henry, Munro died of a stroke in Albany. Munro was promoted posthumously in January of 1758 to full Colonel.
