Actor. Born in Sacramento, California, he was a stage performer and a pioneer in films during the silent movie era. In the early 1900s, he was the Vitagraph screen company's top leading man and was voted America's number one star in 1915. His most noted credits included "A Tale of Two Cities" (1911), "The Juggernaut" (1915), "The Goddess" (1915), "Arsene Lupin" (1917) and "Fortune's Mask" (1922). He died of bronchial pneumonia in Hollywood, California, at age 47. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
