Before becoming a Cadet at West Point, he served as a Private of Vermont Volunteers, May 2 to Aug. 15, 1861, and Mar. 1, 1862, to Sep. 5, 1863, being engaged in the various battles and operations of the Army of the Potomac in the Virginia, Peninsular, Maryland, Rappahannock, and Pennsylvania Campaigns.
Graduated from the U. S. Military Academy on June 15, 1870. He served as Police Commissioner for the City of Detroit from 1896-1900.
