After her husband died in Kentucky in early 1849 and before the 1850 census was taken, she moved to Adams County, Illinois with her four sons; John A., James Henry, Samuel, Peter and her daughter Ellen where her Brother James Wiseheart lived and owned a farm. The Census of 1850 shows Mary Catherine aged 41 years old and children; John A. 21, James H. 17, Ellen 16, Samuel 14 and Peter 12 living close by to her brother James Wiseheart near Columbus in Adams County with son John A. engaged in farming but owning no land at the time.
She later remarried a Mr. John Lewis Carson on 26 Sept 1852 in Adams County, Illinois. Mr. Carson preceded her in death after 1860.
Mary Catherine is buried in Jefferson County Kentucky in the Cane Run Presbyterian Cemetery.
