His brother John, for which he was close, lived for some time in Gomez Palacio, Durango, Mexico before coming back to San Antonio to die. It is possible Joseph might have went to Mexico where brother John lived and died there.
Married Elizabeth Strohmeyer on 12/15/1861 in San Antonio. In the 1870 Bexar County Census oldest daughter Margret is listed as 13 years old which means she was born about 1857, before the marriage in 1861. In brother John's obituary he requested his daughter send for him so he could die here in San Antonio where his wife and children were buried. John's daughter was listed as Mrs John Riegel, which would be Margaret Riegel. John married Elizabeth Strohmeyer's sister Catherine in 1854, it is possible Margaret(Maggie) was the daughter of John and Catherine and raised by sister Elizabeth and Joseph.
