19 September 1934 Clutha Leader
Obituary
John Finn Aged 57 years
It is with deep regret that the death is recorded of Mr John A Finn of Lanark Street Balclutha. Mr Finn's death has cast a gloom over his large circle of friends, to whom he has endeared himself during his fellowship with the people of the district.
The late Mr Finn was a son of Mr John Finn who was for a time a newsagent in Balclutha. He was born in Balclutha in the year 1877 and received his education at the Balclutha Public School. In his early years he followed farming occupation, being very interested in horses. He then went into the employ of Mr T D Pearson, coal merchant, where he remained for a period of about eight years. Following this he worked for Messre Gust and Sons Ltd for about 15 years. In his youth the late Mr Finn was a very keen sport being an enthuastic member of the Clutha Football Club. He was a keen angler and was also an interested participator in shooting. In later years he joined the bowling Blub and he was well known as one of the most consistently good bowlers the club has had. For six consecutive seasons he was champion of South Otago on two occasions. He also won the championship singles at the Oamaru Easter Tournament. He was elected vice president of the club in 1930. He was also an ex member of the Balclutha Fire Brigade.
The late Mr Finn is survived by his wife (formerly Miss Chalmers) two daughter and one son, one of the daughters being Mrs J Stubley of Rangiora. He has also two brothers Henry (Wallacetown) and Thomas (Forest Hill) and a sister Mrs Reid (Tapanui).
The funeral which was largely attended took place this afternoon from St Marks Church members of the Loyal Dalton Lodge of which deceased was a member, taking part in the service.
