Mr. J.D. Hefner, 92 years of age, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 18, 2014 at Carolinas Medical Center - University after a recent decline in health.

He was born March 9, 1922 in Charlotte, NC, son of the late Frank Hefner Sr. and late Carrie Elizabeth Newell Hefner. He was the youngest, and last surviving of eleven children. He was preceded in death by brothers, Roy, Frank, and John; sisters Cora, Willie Belle, Gertrude, Cleo, Beatrice, Annie and Mary.

Mr. Hefner was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the European Theater in the 99th Infantry Division. Mr. Hefner was a retired building contractor, and built many homes throughout Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working on his farm. He was a member of Rocky River Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Hefner is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Sadie Query Hefner, daughters, Linda H. Lentz and husband John; Dianne H. Fisher and husband Terry, all of Harrisburg. Grandchildren include Carrie E. Edgison and husband Eric; Dr. Aaron C. Lentz and wife Dr. Jacqueline Dzau; Alice L. Good and husband Ryan; Nathan Shue and wife Rachel. He also had 5 great-grandchildren; Eric, Anna, Luke, Rae, and Sadie Marie.

The family will receive friends Thursday May 22, 2014 from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord. The funeral service will be at 3:00 pm in the Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel and will be officiated by Rev. Elinor Norman. A private burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rocky River Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 7940 Rocky River Rd, Concord, NC 28025; or charity of choice.
