Barney was sitting alongside a rural highway and basically watching the traffic go by when he and I first met on July 2, 2001. When I saw him, I thought he was such a gorgeous animal, so I swung around and pulled off the road nearby.
I was behind him a distance, and I called to him. He looked at me over his shoulder, I beckoned again, and he swung around and came to me. I petted him and talked to him, and I could see he was in need of care. I already had 3 cats, and I thought the last thing I needed was one more, so I thought to let Barney make the decision.
I sat in my truck with the door open. He looked up at me and I told him that I really didn't need another cat, but if he jumped in, I'd take him home. That was the beginning of our nearly 13 years together.
Barney was a very lively cat and always kept me on my toes. He knew I didn't want him in the bedrooms, so he made it a point to make a mad dash right into them whenever I opened a door. He seemed to believe it was quite amusing when I fussed at him to "Get the &*^% out".
Barney was to be an indoor cat to me, but he had other ideas. Ever watchful, he was occasionally a bit too quick and away he went, out and over the fence. Well, there were lots of trees to climb, and lots of girls to chase, and lots of grasshoppers and butterflies to hunt, so what should I have expected?
