Ken died peacefully May 17, 2014, of heart failure. Ken was born in Kansas City, MO July 9, 1937, to Earle A. Hapke and Christian St. Clair (Beynon) Hapke. Ken was preceded in death by his parents.

Ken is survived by his wife of 30 years, Margie (Warren); brother, Earle (Vickie) Hapke; sister, Christian (Hapke) Greene; son, Kirk, and his children Kasey and Konnor; and daughter, Kelly (Hapke) Rhodes-Lockwood, and her children Dane, Dalton, and Haley.

Ken served with the Air Force 442nd Tactical Wing during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Ken was a Professional Engineer licensed in Missouri, Kansas, and New York, and a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, Kansas Engineering Society, American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, and a member of the Brookridge Country Club. He began his career as an HVAC engineer in 1958 at Scott & Kinney Mechanical Engineering. He worked a few years in Midland, MI for Dow Chemical, then returned to the Kansas City area to work for Holloway, Perkins & Eisman, then formed his own company, TEC. Inc., with Ray Perkins and James Smith. TEC specialized in the design of mechanical and electrical systems for commercial and institution buildings. Ken left TEC in 1976 to join C.L. McMichael Co., Inc., as an HVAC designer and manufactures' representative. Ken's proudest accomplishments included working on the Truman Sports Complex, Crowne Center, Alameda Plaza, University of Missouri Medical School at Kansas City, and Houlihan's and Domani Shops on the Country Club Plaza.

Ken retired in 1995 and in 1997 moved to Marco Island, Florida, with his wife Margie where he continued his life-long love affair with automobiles. In Florida Ken was a member of the SWFL Section Mercedes-Benz Club of America.

Per his wishes, Ken was cremated and will be buried at sea. A celebration of life will be held in Overland Park, KS this fall.

Kenneth W. Hapke, 76, Marco Island resident since 1997, formerly of Overland Park, KS, died peacefully Saturday, May 17th, 2014.

We laid Ken's ashes at sea this morning, Saturday 8/16. Here are the coordinates of where we were in the bay when I floated his ashes.
