Businessman. Co-founder with brother John of the Bekins Moving & Storage Company in 1894, one of the oldest businesses in Los Angeles and one of the largest moving companies in the world. Bekins began as a horse drawn van parked at the corner of 2nd and Main, and after one year they had 6 wagons and a storage building. He introduced the first gasoline powered moving truck in Los Angeles in 1903. Several years after forming the company he established a cooperative association which enabled his employees to have a share in the profits of the company. In 1913 Bekins retired as president and devoted the remainder of his life to travel, circling the world four times prior to his passing after a sudden fall at his northern California residence. Bekins sold in 2012 to Wheaton Moving Company. The United States military is one of their biggest customers.
