Elected to Minnesota House in 1970. Elected to U. S. Congress in 1976 where he served until his death. Co-author of legislation in his first term that established the BWCA (Boundary Waters Canoe Area) in northern Minnesota. Friend of the wilderness and the disadvantaged all his life.
