Illegitimate son of Pedro I of Portugal, he was also known as John the Good, John the Great, John the Bastard, and as the Prince of Fond Memory. He became regent in 1383 when his half-brother, Ferdinand I the Handsome, died without a male heir. His union with Philippa of Lancaster, the granddaughter of Edward III of England, produced six children, among which were Prince Henry the Navigator, (the man who stood as a beacon light through the age of European exploration and discovery) and the only surviving daughter, Isabella De Avis, who married Philip III, duke of Burgundy.
