John F. Backus is dead at 68

John F. Backus, 68, of 1501 Warren, retired machinist for the Anaconda Co., died Thursday in his home. Services are tentatively set for Saturday in Sayatovic-White's Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Backus was born in Butte Sept. 1, 1899. He served in Europe in the Navy during World War I. He worked as an apprentice machinist for Western Iron Works four years, then as a machinist aboard a ship two years. Returning to Butte, he worked for Western iron Works for 22 years, then for Anaconda Co. until retirement in 1964. He married Blanche Tolan in 1931. She died in 1965.

Mr. Backus was a 45-year member of the Machinists Union, a member of Silver Bow Lodge 48, AF & AM, the Scottish Rites Bodies, and the Veterans of World War I, Butte Barracks 792.

Survivors include stepdaughters, Mrs. Joseph R. Folz of Beaverton, Ore., and Mrs. Frank T. Divel of Bozeman, a stepson, Clifford Tolan of Canada; sister, Mrs. R. J. Woolford of Butte, nieces and nephews.
