He was elected to represent 3 different New York Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1895 to 1912 (the 11th from 1895 to 1903, the 10th from 1903 to 1909, the 16th from 1909 to 1911, and 10th again from 1911 to 1912). He served as Governor from January 1, 1913 to October 18, 1913, when he was removed from office by impeachment due to charges of mishandling of election funds, a charge that is generally believed to have been fueled by Tammany Hall leaders who Governor Sulzer would not bow down to.
