Opera Singer. Born Marta Birgit Svensson in Vastra Karup, Sweden, she was known as one of the greatest Wagnerian sopranos, her most famous role was being that of 'Isolde' in Richard Wagner's "Tristan And Isolde”. She made her debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1959 after making her stage debut in 1946 at the Stockholm Royal Opera. She continued to perform until she retired in the 1980s.
