Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Golconda, Illinois, he was admitted to the bar in 1853 and began a law practice in Harrisburg. At the start of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army and was commissioned a Major in the 56th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He participated in Mississippi campaign and was promoted Colonel of the 2nd Brigade, 7th Division, XVII Corps in 1862. As brigade commander, he fought in the Battles of Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Atlanta and the March to the Sea. In September 1864, he was promoted Brigadier General and commanded the 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, XV Corps during the Carolina campaign. After the war, he served as the US Pension Commissioner for Civil War veterans, 1889 to 1893.
