Walter Thomas “Tommy” Stalcup, 79, of Carlsbad, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at Carlsbad Medical Center.
He was born on Dec. 14, 1923, in Clovis, the son of W.T. and Nelda Irene Stalcup.
The son of a farmer and a cowboy from birth, Tom Stalcup, affectionately known by many as “Old Tom,” lived in Clovis until 1947 when he followed the Santa Fe Railroad to Carlsbad and later worked for Duval for 32 years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945 as an aviation machinist and mate 2nd class, participating in the liberation of the Philippines as an aerial gunner and plane captain. He was a member of the Black Cat Squadron VPR54.
Mr. Stalcup was a member of First United Methodist Church and Elks Lodge BPOE No. 1558, and held numerous offices in the Eddy County Sheriff’s Posse, from which he received the Harrell Trendor Award for outstanding service and the Best Dressed Cowboy award.
At age 79, he still enjoyed horseback riding and leather crafting, creating saddles, suitcases and belts, family members said. He was a dedicated hospice volunteer for VistaCare, providing companionship, running errands, doing household chores and home repairs for patients.
He was preceded in death by his wife Merle in December 2001; his parents; and one sister, Irene Eberwein.
He is survived by his daughter Renae (and husband Don) Winters of Carlsbad; two granddaughters, Lori and Lisa Winters; two step daughters whom he helped to raise, Sharon Hopkins (Doyle) Howerton and Michele Hopkins (Charles) Berryhill, all of Roswell; and one sister, Thresia Champlin, of Florida.
Rev. Craig Cockrell of First United Methodist Church officiated the services in Carlsbad Cemetery, with the Carlsbad Veterans’ Honor Guard providing military honors. Arrangements were by West Funeral Home in Carlsbad.
