Joseph Borba was born on the island of Piaco in Azores, Portugal on either July 7 1874 or 1875 (Draft Registration Card says 1874). Came from Azores on a Schooner "Julia" sailing from St. George, Azores on 4/1/1895 and arrived in Port of Provincetown on 5/3/1895. Then has been assumed he sailed by boat probably to San Francisco, California. He was naturalized on 12 Aug 1898 in Siskiyou, California. He lived in the Hawkinsville, Montague, Yreka and Etna area during his lifetime. In 1911 he was working with Lemos, Phillips Bro, Borba and St. George Company hydraulic mines in the vicinity of Hawkinsville. Joe had a gold nugget that weighted 53 oz 36 dec before melted and received $926.84 for it in 1907. In the 1920's and 1930's Joseph was a farmer in the Yreka area.
