Civil War Union Brigadier General. Participated in the Siege of Petersburg as Chief of Artillery for the Army of the James' X Corps, and directed a division of Black troops in the XXV Corps during the final months of the war. He had enlisted in the Regular Army as a Private in 1851 and was appointed Brigadier General only 14 years afterwards.
