JWS migrated to South Africa about 1900 from England (not with family in 1901 census) and became a well known trader in Basutoland, now LeSotho. He first lived at Tsime near Butha Buthe but relocated to near Mokhotlong to access trade via the Sani Pass between Lesotho and Natal.

He died in Underberg, Natal and was cremated in Durban. His will requested that his ashes be scattered (probably in Durban by his daughter Irene).
