Edward was born on February 21, 1922 in rural Monroe, the son of Lewis and Sadie (Dop) Johnson. Edward graduated from Monroe High School in 1940. On October 21, 1944 he was united in marriage to Catharine Marshall at the Methodist Church in Monroe.

In addition to his wife and family, his special love was the farm. Edward was a dairy farmer for forty years. He sat on the Board of Swiss Valley and was a member of the Farm Bureau. He worked at Winpower in Newton for over a decade. In addition to farming, he drove truck, custom farmed, sheared sheep and maintained Elk Rock State Park for the Iowa Conservation Commission. He was a steward of the land, who impressed upon his grandchildren the importance of planting trees and preserving nature for the future.

His loving family will deeply miss Edward and his keen sense of humor. Left to honor his memory are his wife, Catharine of 60 years; his children, Lloyd Johnson and his partner Byrd Bettis of Los Angeles, California, Laurel Johnson and his wife Korena of Zachary, Louisiana, LaVon Roth and her husband Stephen of Newton, LuAnn De Haan and her husband Doug of Otley and Linda Van Hemert and her husband Lyle of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Also surviving is a sister, Leona Buwalda of Hermiston, Oregon; 17 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. His parents preceded him in death.
