Rev. Clement Belcher, retired area rector
The Rev. Clement G. Belcher, 70, retired rector of St. James Episcopal Church in Arlington, died at his home in Sunderland Wednesday. He was rector of the Arlington church for 25 years, retiring Dec 1, 1970.
The son of Edwin Willoughby and Mary (Seymour) Belcher, he was born in Falmouth Heights, Mass., July 6, 1902. His early education was at the Gunnery School, Washington, Conn and he also attended St. Paul's School in Geneva, N.Y., and the Episcopal General Theological Seminary in New York City.
Fr. Belcher was admitted to the diaconate and priesthood in the Diocese of Long Island. On Dec 21, 1972, St. Thomas Day, he celebrated his 42nd anniversary as a priest in the Episcopal Church. He had served parishes in Long Island, N.Y.; Indiana, Pa.; Bethel, Vt., and finally in Arlington.
His interest in the Masonic Order began when he became a member of Red Mountain Lodge 63 F&AM of Arlington and during the last quarter century he occupied positions of master of the lodge, high priest of Adoniram 18. He was also master of Bennington Council 3 and eminent commander of Taft Commandery 8, Knights Templar. He was a grand prelate of the Grand Commandery of Vermont and was recipiet of the York Cross of Honor. He was also worthy patron wen his wife was worthy matron of Red Mountain Chapter 41, Order Eastern Star, Arlington, in 1958.
Fr. Belcher and the former Agnes M. B. Williams were married in St James Episcopal Church Aug 4, 1948. The late Rt. Rev. Vedder Van Dyke, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont, solemnized the marriage. The couple build a retirement home in Sunderland in 1969.
Besides his wife, survivors are four sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Arlington tonight and Friday night from 7 to 9. the funeral will be held in St. James Episcopal Church in Arlington Saturday at 10 am. Officiating will be the Rt. Rev. Harvey D. Butterfield, Bishop of the Diocese of Vermont; the Rev. Canon Robert L. Clayton, rector of Zion Episcopal Church, Manchester Center; the Rev. Guy E. Kagey of West Arlington, and the Rev. Lawrence Sherwin, rector of St. James Episcopal Church.
Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to St. James Episcopal Church or the Arlington Rescue Squad through the funeral home office.
Members of Red Mountain Chapter, Order Eastern Star, will conduct their service Friday at 7:30 pm at the funeral home and Red Mountain Lodge F&AM will hold its service at 8.
