My step-grandmother, Jettie Elizabeth (Ratliff) Belcher, was born on Sept. 25, 1889 in Russell Co., Virginia. She was the daughter of Thomas C. Ratliff (1855-1911) and Anna E. "Annie" McGlothlin (1884-aft 1800). Both of Jettie's parents were born in Virginia and spent their entire lives in that state.

Jettie was the second wife of my grandfather, Martin Luther Belcher (1887-1962). Martin's first wife, with whom he had eight children, was my grandmother, Julia Ann Wilson (1888-1943). She is buried in the Wilson Cemetery (#4) just below Tennessee Ridge, in Boyle Co., Kentucky.

Jettie was married four times and outlived all four of her husbands. She lived almost 15 years after the death of her fourth husband, Luther.

Her first husband was Russell Co., VA native, Roby Mitchell Fuller (1890-1918). He was the son of Beverly Johnson Fuller (1859-1919) and Susannah D. Crabtree (1869-1948). Jettie and Roby were married on May 11, 1910 in Russell Co., VA. Roby died at the age of 27.

Her second husband was George Kindred Fuller (1869-1933), also born in Russell Co., VA. He was the son of George Fuller (1824-1896) and Mary Jane Thompson (1851-1906). Jettie and George were married on Nov. 17, 1919 in Russell Co., VA. George died at the age of 65.

Jettie's third husband was Everett Newburgh Shortt (1865-1942). He was the son of William M. Shortt (1842-1912) and Cosby L. Peck (1847-1971). Jettie and Everett were married on July 16, 1936. Everett died at the age of 76.

Her fourth husband was my paternal grandfather, Martin Luther Belcher (1887-1962). Born in Honaker, Russell Co., VA, he was the son of Joseph Hascue Belcher (1860-1928) and Rachel Katherine Ray (1860-1900).

Luther died on Aug. 2, 1962 in Boyle Co., Kentucky at the age of 75. He is buried in Danville Memorial Gardens.

Jettie died in Bristol, Washington Co., Virginia in July of 1877 at the age of 87. She too, was buried in Danville Memorial Gardens, next to her 4th husband, Luther Belcher.
