Ray was in 705 Sqdn/446 Bomb Group, a B-24 unit Bungay,UK during WWII (radio operator).446BG was dubbed "The Bungay Bucaroos"
He was with 46th,which became the 72 Strat Recon Sqdn on 13 oct 1947, stationed at Ladd Field,Ak.as radio operator on F-13A,which was RB-29 modified for arctic duty.
From Ladd Field Sqdn transfered to Fairfield -Suisun(later renamed Travis AFB)
Starting in april 1951,replacement of RB-29 by RB-36 began.
RB-36 was 10 engine heavy bomber. It had 6 P&W R-4360 engines plus 4 GE J-47 jet engines, mounted two under each wingtip.
In 1955 the 72 SRS became the 72 Bomb Sqdn.By 1958 the B-36 was phased out (along with radio operator) in favor of the B-52.
Ray trained as aerial photographer and flew Photo Recon missions in Viet Nam before retiring as M/Sgt with 22 years service.
