Civil War Union Brevet Major General. An 1818 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he fought in the Mexican War, and was Colonel of the 5th United States Artillery when the Civil War started. He was offered a Volunteer Brigadier General commission, which he turned down to remain in the Regular Army. He rendered valuable service when, while commander of Fort Pickens in Florida, he repulsed Confederate attempts to capture his command. In July 1863, while commander of the New York City, New York Harbor defenses, he help suppress and end the July 1863 New York Draft Riots. Soon after he was retired from the Army with the rank of Colonel, having served 45 years. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on November 23, 1861 for "gallantry and good conduct during the engagement of November 22 and 23, 1861 between Fort Pickens and the rebel batteries". On August 2, 1866 he was brevetted Major General, US Regular Army for "distinguished services in the suppression of the riot in New York City in 1863". (bio by: Russ Dodge)
