Safronia Josephine "Joe" Acker was born on August 11, 1855. She was the daughter of Jackson B. Acker and Margaret Lucinda Crime Acker. Joe's grandparents were Alfred H. Acker and Rachel Herring. Her brother was Christopher Columbus Acker and her sisters were Martha F. Acker and Margaret "Annie" Acker Gates. The Acker family were well established plantation owners in Virginia and later in Anderson, North Carolina.

Josephine was raised in the Springhill Community of Pickens County, Alabama. In 1877 "Joe" Acker married Joseph H. Bryan and bore four children with him: Maggie, Richard Adolphus, Laredo, and Martha "Mattie" Phay.

In the 1880s the family lived near her husband's brother and mother in Gonzales, Texas, however her husband Joseph died in early 1888 and a pregnant Josephine and her children moved back to Pickens County, Alabama to have her child Mattie.

Josephine raised her four children by herself until her untimely death on August 31st, 1895 at the age of 40 years. Her orphaned daughters were sent to live with her sister Annie and her husband Frank O. Gates. Her son Richard was raised by her brother Christopher Columbus (C. C.) Acker.

Josephine is buried in her home community in the Springhill Baptist Cemetery in Pickens County, Alabama along with her brother Christopher Acker and parents Jackson and Lucinda Acker.
