William Dean enlisted in Peyton's Battalion of the Confederate States Cavalry, commanded by Captain D.G. Cooper, on January 15, 1864, at the age of nineteen. He served until the end of the war and surrendered in Jackson on June, 1865.
His obituary from the Brandon News Thursday Nov 3rd, 1904.
"W.D. Pierce who has been in bad health for some time, died the 29th. and was buried at Sinai Cemetery Sunday. Woodmen, of which he was a member, conducted the burial. In the death of Brother Pierce, the Baptist Church at Hickory Ridge, of which he was one of the deacons, loses one of it's best members. His place will be hard to fill in the community. He was always ready to do anything he could for the rest. His wife and children have the sympathy of all. In their affection, may they find comfort in the God whom their dear one trusted. Brother Morris conducted the devotional service.
Mrs Jennie Walker attended the funeral, sister of Mrs. Pierce, also Charlie Russell. Brother Pierce has the sympathy of all in his sad affection."
