He was a cooper and worked on the Erie and Genesee Canals, hence the various stays in Rochester, Danville and Belfast.
His father, Benjamin Fairchild (1765-1801) died during the Revolutionary War and his mother, Celinda Backus died in 1803. He was orphaned at the age of three and lived with maiden aunts and uncles who mistreated him and he ran away.

He died on a job in Canisteo, New York and was taken home to be buried in Belfast. This is documented in a letter from Grandma Rose to her niece, Mabelle Michener. Information provided by a cousin, Susan Fairchild.
