Vaughn J. Hartzell, 90, of 2115 First Ave. SE, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, in St. Luke's Hospital after a short illness. Services: 11 a.m. Friday, First Presbyterian Church. The Rev.
Lori Wunder will officiate. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Funeral Home from 5 to 7 tonight.
The casket will be closed at the church on Friday.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice K. Hartzell; and his brother, Gordon of Cedar Rapids; along with several nieces and nephews.
Vaughn was born April 18, 1915, in Britt, Iowa, the son of Harry and Bertha Hartzell. He graduated from Mitchellville High School in 1934 and attended Capital City Business College in Des Moines. He was employed at First Trust Bank in Sigourney from 1935 to 1955. On June 1, 1941, he was united in marriage to Bernice K. Wiese in Marengo, Iowa.
From 1955 to 1965, he was executive vice president at Farmers State Bank in Marion, Iowa. In 1965, he had an opportunity to purchase the Mechanicsville Trust and Savings Bank when it was about $3 million in deposits. He sold the bank in 1985 when it was a $30 million bank. He and Bernice retired and moved to Cedar Rapids following the sale of the bank.
Vaughn was a member of Masonic Lodge 182 in Sigourney since 1940. He was a Scottish Rite Free Mason since 1957 and a longtime member of the El Kahir Shrine in Cedar Rapids. He was very proud to be a member of the 50-year Bankers Club of the Iowa Bankers Association.
As a banker he prided himself in making quality "character loans" to those who needed a chance to succeed. He and his wife had given significant charitable contributions to St. Luke's Hospital, University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, the University of Iowa and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Venta Conard; and his brother, William.
