LAKE WYLIE, S.C. — Irene C. Oates, 88, of Lake Wylie Retirement Center, formerly of Gastonia, went peacefully to be with the Lord on Oct. 31, 2004, at Lake Wylie Assisted Living Center.

She was born June 20, 1916, in Gaston County, daughter of the late Dean and Mae Carswell.

FUNERAL: 11 a.m. today, The Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors, Gastonia

INTERMENT: Gaston Memorial Park
She was blessed with a keen sense of humor, the love to read, love of her church and a smile for everyone. Her family and friends were most important to her.
The family would like to give special thanks to the Lake Wylie Assisted Living Center staff for the loving care given over the last five years.

SURVIVORS: She was a caring and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and is survived by a loving family; son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Annette Hamilton; daughter, Judy Martin; daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Clete West; and daughter-in-law, Sandra Hamilton; grandchildren, Wyatt Hamilton, Whitney Ruth, Gayle Page, Lynn Welch, Donnie Martin, Brian Houlihan, Bobby West, Michelle Smith, Judy Thomasson, Christopher and Shane Mills; great-grandchildren, Laura Page, Sandy Smith, Ias Smith, Anelissa West; brother, Bobby Carswell; and sisters, Betty Haines and Louise Turner
