J. Frank Sherwood ran for the Clerk of Courts in Mercer Co., PA and lost to a former assistant clerk. In an advertisement he made "Ability Counts -- I believe every voter should consider the qualification of every candidate running for office ... particularly for the office of Clerk of Courts ... the crossroads of the County, where important records for all legal transactions must be efficiently maintained. Here is where ability counts most of all. I base my campaign and my desire to seek this important county office on the following qualifications: I am a 1939 graduate of Bucknell University. I spent 5 years in the military service as a personnel officer for an anti-aircraft battalion where I supervised a stall of 12 men who administered the needs of 3600 men including their payroll, service records, war bonds, insurance, etc. I served on the Sharon school board for 6 years and 1 year as treasurer of the board. I was named by the Shenango Valley Jaycees as the "outstanding young man of the year" in 1954 and have been a businessman for the past 17 years in the retail and wholesale floor-covering field. -- I earnestly solicit your vote and support."
