US Congressman. Elected as a Democrat to represent New York's 6th District in the Fifty-first Congress, he served from March to November 1889. An 1878 graduate of New York City's Columbia Law School, he was admitted to the bar the following year and became a practicing attorney in Manhattan. He ran unsuccessfully for the US House of Representatives as an Independent in 1884. By the end of the decade Fitzgerald had allied himself with New York's Tammany Hall political machine, and he resigned his seat in Congress after eight months to serve as Register of New York County (1889 to 1892). He was Surrogate of New York County from 1892 until his death, and was also a delegate to the 1893 State Constitutional Convention. Fitzgerald's death at 50 resulted from complications of injuries sustained in a trolley car accident in Canada four years earlier. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
