American Navajo Indian Code Talker. World War II hero. Samuel "Jesse" Smith was too young to sign up for the service during WWII however an error allowed him to do so. He became a code talker during WWII. The 381 members used their first language to transmit messages by radio and telephone to each other with the enemy listening to their every word, but understanding none. Smith was 17-years-old when he was assigned to the 4th Marine Division. They would later be nicknamed the Fighting Fourth for their battles in the Marshal Islands. Smith survived survived the Battles of Roi Namur, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. After the war Smith was a long-time tribal police officer and tribal employee. We was married and raised 9 children. On April 14, 2014, Samuel "Jesse" Smith, Sr. lost his fight against pneumonia at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
