Death: Sep. 26, 2000

Actor. Attended Columbia University as a student of Playwriting. He started in show business as a writer and stumbled into acting by accident. Trying to sell a play, he was drafted into playing a role at a rehearsal. He made his Broadway debut in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play "All the Way Home". He has worked on stage, screen, and television. He is probably best remembered for his roles on "Empty Nest" and "Soap". He played lovable screwball Burt Campbell on Soap, which earned him an Emmy in 1980. He earned a second one nine years later for his role as Dr. Harry Weston on "Empty Nest." For his performances in Empty Nest, he would also win a Golden Globe Award. Other career highlights include performing with Jimmy Stewart in a stage production of "Harvey". He also appeared in "The Undefeated" with John Wayne and Rock Hudson. Over the years, he performed on Broadway and in films where he usually played supporting roles. An exception was the 1981 film "S.O.B.", in which he played lead character Felix Farmer, a Hollywood producer-director modeled on the film's actual producer-director, Blake Edwards. His last production was in 1997 in the Family Channel's "Dog's Best Friend," about a young boy befriended by a pack of barnyard animals. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6777 Hollywood Blvd. He was married four times. Patricia Jones (1955), Joan Hackett (1965), Lenore Stevens (1978) and Serena Robinson (1992). (bio by: Jane Stacy Eubanks)
