Mrs. Clifford Conant and Her Seven Children Died Friday When House Burned

CLAYTON,, Mrs. Clifford Conant and her seven children, who
perished Friday in a fire that leveled their home, were buried yesterday in one large grave. The grief-stricken husband collapsed during services in the church and again at the grave. The only other survivor of the tragic blaze was Susan, 13, the oldest child. She cried bitterly as she was leaving the church but regained her composure before reaching the cemetery.During the service, the gray, steel casket containing the bodies of the mother and her year-old daughter Nancy Anne was flanked by three white children-sized caskets on each side. More than 400 persons crowded into the Methodist Church of the Northern New York village, for the service and another l50 waited outside in a drizzling rain. Conant, sitting in the front pew collapsed midway through the sermon. He was not revived until after the service and was carried from the church. He collapsed again at the end of the committal service at St. Lawrence Cemetery. Mrs. Conant's mother, Mrs.Floyd Thompson of Split Rock collapsed and was assisted from the church. The mother and children were trapped in the flaming bedroom, of their three-room home near here early Friday. Conant tried twice to save his family but flames forced him back each time. He was treated for shock,, hysteria and cuts of the hands and arms suffered when he smashed a window in a rescue attempt. The other children who died were Clifford Conant, Jr., 11; Stanley, 10; Lawrence and Louise, eight-year-old twins; Robert, 5, and Frederick, 4.
