James William Sampers was the son of James Sampers and Vivian Curry.
IC1 Sampers' tour of duty in Vietnam began on December 15, 1968. He was assigned as a United States Naval Advisor to Vietnamese River Patrol Group 51 at Cat Lai. On September 7, 1969, IC1 Sampers was traveling from Saigon to Cat Lai with ENS Alan Joslin. Approximately six kilometers east of Saigon, on the Cat Lai Highway, their jeep was ambushed by small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. IC1 Sampers was killed and ENS Joslin was severely wounded. IC1 Sampers' name is inscribed on Panel 18W, Line 56, of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
IC1 Sampers was survived by his mother, wife, and four children.
