ABERDEEN - Jessie L. James Sr., 89, died Friday, April 30, 2004, at Clay County Medical Center. He was a member of New Hebron M.B. Church in the Egypt community. He worked at Pullman Coach Company for a number of years. He was very active in the community, the oldest member of the choir and really enjoyed singing.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Sat. May 8, at New Hebron M.B. Church with Rev. Sam Crawford officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Williams Funeral Home of Okolona is in charge of arrangements
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Louise Washington James; six daughters, Evelyn Harrison of Compton, Calif., Ruth Wright and husband Robert of Nashville, Tenn., Lillie Gardner and husband Willie, Maddie Ezell, Belinda Gladney and husband Jack, Gennette Gladney and husband Willie, all of Aberdeen; two sons, Walter James and wife Susie of Waukegan, Ill. and Jessie James Jr. and wife Linda of Aberdeen; a grandson that he reared, Carlos James of Aberdeen; three sisters, Johnnie Lou Baker of Aberdeen; Essie Chandler and husband Alex of New York and Annie Davis of St. Louis, Mo.; four sisters-in-law, Ladie James, Essie McClendon, Jamiah Washington and Julia Ware; two brothers, Ben James and wife Hazel of Ohio and David James and wife Plaxcellia of Aberdeen; 38 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren; one special nephew, John James and two special nieces, Vernell Hodges and Gloria Stein Rily.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John D. James and Lillie Vasser James, and one daughter, Pearline James.
Visitation will be 2 until 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. The body will be placed in the church one hour before services.
