Henry Kirke Porter
Birth: 1840
Death: 1921

US Congressman. Born in Concord, New Hampshire, he attended the college at the New London Academy, then graduated from Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, in 1860 and was one of the founders of the Young Menís Christian Association. During the Civil War, he served in the 45th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia, Union Army in 1862 and was mustered out of service in July 1863 and served on the United States Christian Commission in 1863. After the war, he engaged with his father in the manufacture of light locomotives at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and became president of the company in May 1866. He was president of the Pittsburgh Y.M.C.A. (1868-87) and vice president of the Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce, (1892-1906). In 1903, he elected as an Independent Republican to the Fifty-eighth Congress, serving until 1905. He then became member of the board of trustees and president of the board of directors of the Western Pennsylvania Institute for the Blind in 1905. He resumed the manufacture of locomotives, was a member of the International Committee of the Y.M.C.A., was a trustee of the Carnegie Institute, trustee of the Crozier Theological Seminary and was a member of the Board of Fellows of Brown University, until his death. He died at age 80 in Washington, D.C. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
