He served as Mayor of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1840 to 1841. He was elected as a Whig to represent Pennsylvania's 22nd Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1841 to 1843. He chose not to run for re-election, and was appointed by President John Tyler as United States Chargé d'Affaires to Denmark, serving in that diplomatic post from 1843 to 1847. His wife, Sophia Arabella Bache Irwin, was a great-granddaughter of Benjamin Franklin.
