Leonid Gaidai
Birth: Jan. 30, 1923
Death: Nov. 19, 1993

Film Director. He was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR (1989) the highest reward in the arts area. He took part in WWII. Returning back, trained as an actor. Later he graduated from VGIK and directed more than 20 film comedies considered in Russia as classical. Among the most popular are: Operation Y and Shurik's Other Adventures ("Operatsiya Y i drugie priklyucheniya Shurika", 1965), and The Prisoneress of the Caucasus, or Shurik's New Adventures ("Kavkazskaya plennitsa, ili novye priklyuchenia Shurika", 1966). The Diamond Arm (Brilliantovaya ruka, 1968), Ivan Vasilievich Changes Profession (Ivan Vasilievich menyaet professiyu, 1973). His top-grossing movie "The Diamond Arm" sold 76,700,000 tickets in the Soviet Union alone. He is virtually not known abroad due to the specific nature of his comedies, but remains among the most-loved film directors in his own country. (bio by: julia&keld)
