Tell City Anzeiger, Tell City, Indiana, January 28, 1911

Mrs. Theresa Halbleib, nee Schaefer, passed away here suddenly on January 25, 1911, Wednesday at 1:30 in the morning as the result of a heart ailment at the age of 47 years, 3 months and 21 days.

She was born October 3, 1863, and after reaching age attended the local schools. When she graduated from the same, she was a good support to her mother (Theresia).

She was married to Mr. John Halbleib (on May 27, 1884 at St. Paul's Catholic Church). The marriage was blessed with two daughters (Clara born in 1885 and Mary in 1886) and when they were still minors (approx. 1899), their father moved to the West (Lynx, Arizona to become a gold miner).

Initially they heard from him now and then and later his letters ceased and he seemed to be completely missing; at least one heard nothing from him. (Neither Theresa nor the two daughters ever heard from John again. However someone in Tell City corresponded with him, as he listed himself as "single" in the 1910 US Census for Arizona and in the 1920 US Census for Arizona, he listed himself as widowed (so he was aware of Theresia's death in 1911. John died in 1940 in Yavapi county, Arizona.)

Now (1899) it was the job of Theresa to provide for both her children and to raise them. Day and night she worked and watched them with pride, grow up. After they left school they were helpful to their mother and lightened her heavy workload. Later her oldest daughter, Miss Klara Hableib, became a cleaning woman and today runs one of the best cleaning supply stores here, in which her mother and younger sister, Mrs. Albert Kiefer, steadily work.

She was a loving, caring mother, always thinking of the welfare of her children. She always enjoyed general respect and her passing is deeply mourned.

Besides her daughters, Miss Klara Halbleib and Mrs. Albert Kiefer, she leaves her step-mother Mrs. Charles (Mary) Schaefer and six brothers, August Schaefer of Beatrice, Neb, Mich and George Schaefer of Owensboro, Stephan Schaefer of Indianapolis, twin brothers Edward and Peter Schaefer of here, and four sisters, Mrs. Frank Vollman and Miss Katie Schaefer of Owensboro, and Mrs. Jos. Gaesser of here, and Mrs. Nick Schaad of Dugger, Ind. She was a long-time member of the St. Ann Society, under whose auspices her burial took place yesterday morning from St. Paul's Church to St. Mary's Cemetery. Rev. Joseph A. Thie conducted the funeral service. Our sympathy to those severely tried.
