Ruth's father built a sod barn and a small house on the land he won when the Cherokee Strip opened up in 1889. He added rooms to the house as his family grew. This is the home where Ruth was born and raised. She graduated from high school at McPherson, Kansas and college at Greenville, Illinois. Ruth married (eloped!) Laurence Arksey at Vandalia, Illinois on 25 May 1922. About 1926, with their infant son, they sailed from New York City to Lisbon, Portugal where they would prepare to be missionaries. At Mozambique, Africa, Ruth home schooled her children and taught literacy skills to African women and helped to improve family health. About 1946, Ruth and Laurence returned to America where he would pastor Presbyterian churches in Washington state until they retired in 1971. In 1972, they moved permanently to Georgia.
