Melvin R. Montoya, Sr., 60, a resident of Dixon left us to be with his heavenly Father on Friday, March 21, 2014. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfredo Montoya and Anne Cruz; brother, Alfred Cruz, sister, Erlin Montoya; nephew Tommy Serrano; and mother and father in law, Ologia and Juan D Gonzales.

Melvin was a kind hearted man who would make time for friends and family, and was always ready to give a helping hand. Born in Embudo on October 13, 1953, he lived the majority of his life in Dixon, where he raised his family, and enjoyed tending to the animals he raised. He left behind his loving wife, Bernie Montoya of 35 years, one son, Jonathan Montoya and wife Francine, two granddaughters who were the light of his life, Rosalee “Sunshine” Montoya, and Anna Marie “Bubbles” Montoya. He is also survived by one brother, Roger, three sisters, Thelma and partner Joe, Charlene Trujillo and husband Frutoso, Lillian Brito and husband Joe; in-laws whom he considered his blood, Mary Ann and David Garcia, Shirley and Gilbert Lopez, Anival Gonzales, and Jacobo Gonzales; friends who he considered brothers, Michael, Albert, Kenny, and Wilfred Martinez, many nieces, nephews, God-children, and many friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Dixon, with a burial to follow at the Presbyterian Cemetery in Dixon. The family of Melvin Montoya, Sr. has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley.
